The Making of the Clay Sculpt |
|

|

I started with a fiberglass mannequin head. I measured certain points (chin to nose, nose to eye line etc.) and then compared it to several actual human heads to ensure proper fitting. |

Then I started making a clay skeleton frame with soft clay. This frame helped me determine the depth and amount of clay needed. Since I wanted the helmet to be symmetrical this frame support this. |

Then I started working on the face, filling in the skeleton frame with both the soft and hard clay. |

I thought I was on the right track and then realized the whole jaw area was wrong. |

So I cut if off and re did it. |

After 5 months and many adjustments I was finally ready to check to see if it was symmetrical. This is a trick using string. |

Finally satisfied and ready for first cast. |
